6/27/09, Mission Patrol

On this day of June the 27th, 2009, we the San Francisco Guardian Angels will meet at our new HQ (953 Mission St.) at 10:00am. We begin with discussing our updates and upcoming events, then we go into our prebreif to plan out our patrol.

The patrol will be in the Mission Dist. there will be only one team. I J.D. will lead this team with Greencard watching my back. We will be using radios for communication, this will help train the new guys for radio codes, and this will give them some practice. So we pair up and head to the bus stop to catch bus #14, we get on the bus and we are on our way to Mission St.

Our stop is 16th St. and Mission. We are now off the bus and ready to start out the patrol, we go down the main alley ways, we pick up a few needles, but no bad guys. We did do the 16th to 24th street tour, but no bad guys, we even check out the Alioto Park, no bad guys. So the ideal is we get out as much as we can then hopefully the bad guys will go somewhere else. We are now about to call it a day but there are a few things that we need to take care of at our new HQ, so we stop at some places, pick up a few things. Get to the HQ for our debreif, next thing to do is fix up the place as we need it to get it up and running. We had a great day, we had a great patrol and we came back safe.

Friday, 6/19/2009, San Pablo

The SF Guardian Angels will be going to a community meeting in SAN PABLO. This is a meeting to see if they are interested in starting a Guardian Angel Chapter there.

The Angel that has been requested to be the chapter leader there is SPIDER, SPIDER has been in the Guardian Angels for 7 years, and he has been a leader for 2 years. He is a qualified Guardian Angel, he is a First Aid Instructor, this is the angel for the job if they are ready for a chapter there.

The angels meet at the HQ at 08:00am to go to this meeting, they got to SAN PABLO at the meeting around 10:00am. The meeting had already started, the Oakland Chapter Leader (AJAX) was there, the Solano Chapter Leader ("O") was there and now we had our members from San Francisco Chapter there. The meeting was not going as expected, and there was not the right questions asked, there was not an agreement at this time. So it was undecided for a Guardian Angel Chapter to be started in this city, but there will be more decisions on this issue in there upcoming meetings as stated.

The angels had agreed to leave the meeting and to go back to our chapters to report on how the meeting went. I J.D. received this report and I understood how this meeting could go the way it did, things don't always go the way you want them, you have to work at it, and you have to be honest about it. But we will hopefully wait and see how this turns out, and to see if they will contact us in the future, we are GUARDIAN ANGELS and we don't give up.

Convention in NYC, June 12-15

On Friday June 12th, 2009 we the San Francisco Guardian Angel Chapter went to New York for our CONVENTION. This is our 30th year anniversary and this is where the Guardian Angels first began.

There are going to be Guardian Angels from around the world there and every angel would like the chance to go to this CONVENTION. As we did get this chance, we are a blessed chapter, because there where 9 of us San Francisco Angels that got to go on this trip to New York.

That evening on Friday we arrived in NY, made it to the hostel, the place that we would be staying with other angels, changed into our uniforms to begin night patrols. The leaders that had been there before knew how to start things out, first is to separate the angels into teams for patrols, next is to go into these areas that are picked out by these leaders so no one criss-crosses each other.

My leader of our patrol took us into the sub-ways, this was cool but it was hot outside, and I did learn how to patrol sub-ways again, but I did not know if the other angels I was with had experience. Got back up to street side to meet up with another team, posted up for awhile then headed back to the hostel for debrief. Got to the hostel, did our debrief, came back safe, a few of us was tired, called it a night.

On Saturday June 13th, 2009 all Guardian Angels will meet up with Curtis Sliwa at a movie theater to hear upcoming events and upcoming announcements. There was a big surprise for all the angels, Sliwa's Mom and Dad, and his family were there for everyone to meet, this was a moment to remember for all of us. Next we marched down to one of the GA leaders DO-JO, a self defense studio and a Guardian Angel HQ.

I felt this was cool a place, this was a place to come to be somebody and to learn confidence in yourself. Then the rain came as we started to head out to our next assignment, a Festival, to help out with traffic control and crowd control. It was raining, but everyone was OK with it, we even do it in SF because the rain doesn't stop the drug dealers. The rain stopped the Festival was ending we got into ranks and march back to the hostel for the award ceremony.

Curtis Sliwa was there and always as he does, a great job for acknowledging the chapters for there well done deeds. Next is the night patrol to the McDonald's, the store that Curtis first started thinking of doing something about the streets, this is amazing a chance to see how this first started with Curtis. We took some pictures, paused for a moment, and begin the tour back to the hostel. It was getting late so we all called it a night and thank Curtis for his story where it first began.

On Sunday June 14th, 2009 our day is pretty much planed out, first thing is to get some breakfast and the second thing is to make sure everyone is wearing their best uniform for the PARADE. Today we are going to be in a PARADE, The Puerto Rican Parade. Everyone is very excited and very thrilled to be doing this, as of now all the angels must be ready and march to the area where the PARADE begins. We get there to the area and never in my life have I ever seen this many Guardian Angels come together to do an event. There had to be at lease 100 Guardian Angels, and there was the leaders that started with Curtis Sliwa (The Alumni), there was even Curtis's family that got involved. This is a major event for the Guardian Angels to do anything like this, and it was fantastic, it was the biggest, it was the most, it was the loudest PARADE I have ever seen in my life.

As the PARADE had reached its end for us, there was so much more to go for the Bands and the Floats. Then we begin to march to Central Park to take a break and grab some water. While we were taking our break I was thinking, I am very proud to be a part of this as an angel and I feel the other angels felt the same way. Now we began to march through Central Park back to the hostel, we got there at the hostel we looked like one long line of Guardian Angels, it looked great, then Curtis Sliwa spoke and said he had to graduate one more angel to Safety Patrol, this was an honor to see this, this man had been in training for almost a year, this man is 77 years old, but he was ready. Then he dismissed us and we all started to make plans to get home, or to go out on the town. Our chapter had one more night, so we went out to TIME SQUARE and had a great time, then we went back to the subway to get back to the hostel.

On Monday June 15th, 2009 we wake up, but there would be no Guardian Angels today. Today we fly back to San Francisco, all 9 of us, no one got left behind. There is not much to say about this day, one-because we were tired, two-because we were hungry, and three-because we had learned so much about the Guardian Angels and about ourselves. This is what it is all about, (Commitment, sacrifice, caring) that is DARE TO CARE, that is the GUARDIAN ANGELS. CAPTER LEADER/JERRY LONGORIA/J.D.

June 6th Patrol, Haight-Ashbury

Today is Saturday June 6th 2009, we have a lot on our schedule. The day starts with prebrief, the prebrief is a huge matter today because of the CONVENTION that will be held in N.Y. next week, this is very very important, and we all know this. After discussing this matter we went on to plan out our patrol for today, our area today is the Haight/Ashbury District.

We have patrolled this district before and we have been wanting to get back there, the reason is we have not received any calls from this district lately. Until recently, we were requested and we are excited to go back there, we have 10 angels for this patrol, two teams, Greencard will be lead team, I J.D. will be shadow team, and we are using all radios for communication.

We do have a contact person, his name is David, and his group is called Residents Against Drugs (RAD) but we will not meet with him until later in the day, he advised us. So we got into our two teams, paired up and headed to the bus stop, caught the #71 bus to this area. Got off at the beginning of Haight St. cut the teams in half, one on one side of the street the other on the other side of the street and marched down to the end of the strip. Stopped for lunch at McDonald's, we went inside to eat and saw a homeless man asleep in one of the seats, the manager of the store asked if we could remove him, and we did by waking this man up and asking him to leave, and he did with no problems.

As we regroup for patrol, we headed into Golden Gate Park, we are on the look out for a gang calling themselves The Fillmore Kids. We begin by cutting the patrol again to cover more area of the park, Greencard's team came across some bad guys that may have been the Fillmore Kids but were not, words were said and one of the guys had got into Greencard's face, so Greencard had to push this guy away for invading in his space, but everything cooled down and we moved on. We got to the family kid park and we patrolled around the area for a while, talked to a few kids, talked to a counselor that came up to us about one of their kids running away from their group home, he gave us a description of the 14 year old girl and his phone number in case we hear anything.

It was getting later into the day, so we marched out of the park, we posted up at Golden Gate Park's main entrance where an incident had occurred. This is where the call had originally came from, of a couple, a man and a woman had gotten robbed and beat up by the Fillmore Kids. But it was OK on this evening, next we headed back up Haight St. to David's house for a meeting, he had pass on to us on how the neighborhood has gotten, as the meeting was coming to its end he did invite us to the neighborhood cookout in his back yard, we used to come to these all the time and it was time to come back to them for the neighborhood.

This is a good thing, to get the support back, and to stay in touch, we are very glad to come back to this neighborhood, The Haight/Ashbury District. We said our goodbyes and headed back to the bus stop, caught the #71 bus, made it back to our new HQ 953 Mission St. suit 201.

We had great day, we had a safe day, we did our debrief, and we did have one promotion today COBRA to LT. Great job guys from your chapter leader, (J.D.)

There are nine angels to do this event, this is a good turnout for Sunday, and this shows how dedicated we are. Our contact person is Tatiana she is a cancer victim, but she has a heart of gold, her husbands name is Eric, they where both ready to give this event today because they do this event every year. Our job is to direct the vehicles to the parking area with the signs that we used and to give directions to this event, afterwords we came back to the event area to do security for the perimeter. There was a Band, some Dancers, a Story Teller, Face Painting and much much more. There where other volunteers there also that did a great job, it took a lot of work from all of us but it was well worth it. This day goes out to Tatiana, for being a loving person and a caring person, we need more people like her. At the end of the day it is 4:00pm, the event ended we said our goodbye's to everyone and we did get a ride back to HQ but we stop out for dinner first, as we were driving away each of us angels thank each other for a safe day, a productive day, and a day I myself (J.D.) will always will remember.
